Whether you need to change your home Wi-Fi password, configure port forwarding for a gaming server, update firmware, or set up parental controls, you must first access your router's administrative web dashboard. To do that, you need your network's Default Gateway IP address.

1. What Is a Default Gateway?

In computer networking, the Default Gateway is the intermediary device—almost always your physical Wi-Fi router or fiber optical terminal—that passes traffic between your local home network (LAN) and the outside public internet (WAN).

Whenever your device requests a webpage or IP address that does not exist within your local subnet, it forwards the packet directly to the Default Gateway to figure out where to route it.

CRUCIAL SECURITY ADVICE

Change Your Router's Default Admin Password Immediately!

Most commercial routers ship with factory default login credentials (e.g. username admin and password admin or password). If an attacker gets onto your Wi-Fi, they can take full control of your DNS server settings and redirect you to phishing clones. Always set a strong, unique administrative password.
